We got up early and ate our left over pizza for breakfast. We were on the road by 8:00 am. It was an overcast morning but the sun broke through as we got inland. We took the Avenue of the Giants until it ended and then hopped on the 101 north.
After awhile of driving, we stopped in Eureka and saw some of the cool Victorian architecture. It was still early so nothing was open downtown worth stopping for. We did drive over a bridge to Samoa and visited the local Maritime Museum. Very small but interesting.
By mid-morning we reached The Trees of Mystery, which has a huge (talking) statue of Paul Bunyan and an equally huge statue of his ox Babe. We did the whole tourist thing and walked the trails till we came to the Sky Trail; an elevate walkway over netted suspension bridges and observation platforms high up the in trees. Then it was on to the Sky Tram which takes you up into the tree canopy level. You disembark at an observation platform and then get back on one of the tram cars back to the start. The tour ends with a walk through the Trail of Tall Tales with wood carvings related to the Paul Bunyan lore. Exit through the (vast) giftshop which also had a pretty cool small museum of indigenous artifacts from all across the US (mostly baskets but lots of beadwork, tools, clothing, etc.)
We reached Crescent City at around 2:30; check in at the Northwoods Inn Best Western was supposed to be at 4 but they let us check in early. A decent room and we were glad to check in early. Did a quick trip to the Safeway for a few items.
Then we were off to the aquarium they have here; it's just down the road a few blocks. Small aquarium with a guided tour. They do have seals and sea lions (the seals are trained to do a show) and a leopard shark to pet as well as touch tanks with starfish and anemones. They also had some large tanks with sharks, rays and sturgeon and some local fish.
After the aquarium, we went to Schmidt's House of Jambalaya, a few blocks past the hotel and on the harbour. We ordered some jambalaya and some fish and chips to take away. As we were waiting on the patio, a server came over to a couple that had ordered food after us to tell them that it would be an hour wait. We asked about our order and were told it would be 45 minutes to an hour. So we went back to the hotel and waited for them to call when the order was ready. About 40 minutes or so later they called and we picked up our food. Good jambalaya but the fish and chips were already getting soggy.
No just kicking back and resting, ready for a new day tomorrow.
