Day 18: Chester to Tahoe Vista

Tahoe Vista, California, United States
Another early morning on the road.  We were off by 9 and headed down Highway 89 which is very rural and runs through thick forest of pine trees and creeks.  We reached Truckee by 11 or so.  We walked along the historic downtown.  Lots of interesting shops.  I bought a little chainmail scrubbing pad for my cast iron cookware.  Then we stopped at Bar of America for lunch since they had the best choice of salads.  We decided to wait in the bar since it was going to be a 20 minute wait or so.  Had margaritas, which, for $13 each had a lot of ice.  Then we were seated and split a tenderloin and bleu cheese salad which was really good.
After lunch it was a short drive to Tahoe Vista on Lake Tahoe.  We checked into the Fireside Inn a bit early.  Nice room with a gas fireplace and a lot of space.  We walked across the street to view the lake which was wind-whipped with many white caps and waves crashing on shore.
Decided to take a drive around the lake.  We stopped at a tourist info place and got some info on some hikes and lake cruises.  Then we continued around the lake, stopping at various vista points.  The lake was beautiful blue and it was a nice sunny day.  The drive took a few hours with the stops.  We finally got back to the hotel around 630 and were hungry.  We ended up going to Lanza's which is an old school Italian place.  We met the owner at the door and he said he opened the restaurant in the 70s.  We had some great veal parmesan and angel hair pasta w/sausage; way too much to finish.  We got take home containers and they even gave me a to-go cup for my wine.
Back to the hotel to research lake cruises only to find out that they apparently book up early as the next available lake cruise is next week!  Then off to sleep...
