Today we travel to Mexico. It's sad to say goodbye to Caye Caulker, but it must be done. At this point it dawns on me that I'm only about 3 or 4 days from heading back to NZ. There have been times during this trip that I have considered tossing in the job and just keep travelling for a while longer.
It's going to be a very long day of travel today, estimated to take approximately 12 hours, it's a long time to travel considering we are only going about 480km north, but then again, our roads in NZ aren't as bad as they are here
.
Most of the guys this morning are feeling or at least looking a bit worse for wear. But that's what you get when you party the night away until the small hours of the morning. Surprisingly however, Thomas was up Albright talking until about 5:20am, got about 20 minutes sleep and still seems to be going better than most of the others.
We end up catching a bus up to the Mexican border and were involved in a very minor bus collision, now this wasn't our drivers fault, another bus was trying to sneak past us and had left his door open which clipped against the side of our bus.
We got though the Mexican border crossing with no problems except for our guide Andres, unfortunately they wouldn't let him cross the border. Andres is from Costa Rica and apparently there is a bit of conflict between the counties. First time he went though the border crossing he was held for 3 hours an they flagged his passport
. As his passport was flagged they pulled him aside again and this time wouldn't let him through.
It was sad to say goodbye especially under the circumstances, even Andres had tears in his eyes. We couldn't even able to get a group photo of us all as we were in 'No mans land' and they wouldn't let you have phones or cameras out. Andres was able to advise us of the next few steps and has had a guide organised for our last couple of days before we head back. We weren't even able to tip him as a farewell as most of us didn't have cash on us, an if we did tip him, I'm sure the Mexican security guards would have taken it off him.
Beau was the guide from the trip the other guys did and he is also travelling the same route, so we will most likely catch up with him and he will be able to pass on our tips to Andres. On the brighter side of things, this does mean Andres can probably start doing tours in his own country which he seems to be keen on doing, best of luck to him.
----
We finally made it it Playa del Carmen and were met by a G-Adventures guide by the name of Mark, he took us to our hotel for tr next couple if days, it's pretty nice and has a pool right outside our rooms which I'm sure will get used well by us all.
Off for dinner (or a liquid meal) for most of us, and then off for "just one drink" which turns out to be sever drinks, several shots an who knows how much time out in town, it's almost 4am so Id better head off to bed as have to be up at about 7am for breakfast.
