Confidence and Humility

Travel requires such an interesting balancing act. As a foreigner you are told to walk confidently, look ahead like you have a purpose and destination in mind. Do not show that you are (completely) out of your element or you are sure to be taken for a ride.

But, as a foreigner, you are doing your best to exude this air of control all the while trying to read signs in a different language, check for moving vehicles that obey sometimes different laws, use credit card machines, vending machines, doors and even toilets that operate differently than at home and try to project a friendly attitude so people don't typecast you as a rude, aloof, loud American.

It's no easy feat. And yet, and yet. It is SUCH a privilege.

I am incredibly fortunate to boast a fairly full book of Passport stamps -- though it doesn't compare to some others I've known. There is this sense sometimes of 'keeping up' among travelers. "Oh, you've been to Prague? I haven't yet gone there, but what about Sevilla. Oh? You've never been? Pity." I try my best to avoid this smugness but it often creeps in when you least expect. Travel shouldn't be a competition, however that fear of missing out is often a huge driver for the wanderlust among us.

And isn't that the perfect example of confidence and humility? The wonder/confidence of being where you've been privileged to go and the wonder/humility of hearing about all these places that may never be seen (by you).

Perhaps that's the beauty of travel blogs, travel shows, etc. To be able to see as much as possible of the world, even if through the eyes of another person.

I hope you will enjoy the lens I'll try to provide of the world as I am privileged to see it.

Happy travels!
