Discovering Rome.

Rome, Lazio, Italy
Breakfast begins the day before catching the bus to Centro Celle, where we visit San Vincenzo di Paolo, where three months ago Peter's great Aunt, Sister Margarita died. This was the convent where Peter's great Aunt devoted her life to God for 75 years.

Peter had visited his great Aunt 27 years ago in 1984 and she died at the age of 99 years and 2 months, on the 4th June 2012 . A dear friend said she had a peaceful death and at the end, she had all her faculties.

There was a misconception, that Peter's Aunt was buried at this convent, but in fact Sister Margarita was buried in a cemetery on the outskirts of Rome "Porta Roma". The Sisters kindly invited us to stay for lunch, then Sister Angie and the Mother Superior would take us to the cemetery to visit the grave.

Lunch was a four course meal, Entree, soup. Second Entree, pasta, accompanied by a salad. Main, cutlets and mash potato, Dessert, Fruit, Coffee and Biscotti. A very generous and large lunch. We thanked them for their kind and generous hospitality.

Peter was shown a case of his Great Aunt's belongings and was told that he was welcomed to take any item as a keepsake.

After Lunch, we were taken to the cemetery where we visited the grave of his Aunt . We said a few prayers, before the sisters swept around the grave and a few photographs were taken.

In the afternoon, the Sisters, were kind enough to drop us in the centre of Rome, and we thanked them very much for giving up their time for us.

Peter and I caught the subway and we visited a few sights, our first stop was Piazza del Popolo, a large urban square in Rome {literally means "People's Square}, but historically it derives from the poplars after which the church of Santa Maria del Popolo, in the northeast corner of the piazza, takes its name. The piazza lies inside the northern gate in the Aurelian Walls, once the Porta Flaminia of Ancient Rome, and now called the Porta Del Popolo. This was the starting point of the Via Flaminia, the road to Ariminum (modern-day Rimini) and the most important route to the north. At the same time, before the age of railroads, it was the traveller's first view of Rome upon arrival. For centuries, the Piazza del Popolo was a place for public executions, the last of which took place in 1826 .

In the Piazza we visit the Egyptian Obelisk of Ramesses llPorta del PopoloFontana del Nettuno, the two twin churches of Santa Maria in Montesanto (built 1662-75) and Santa Maria Dei Miraceli (right, built 1675-79). The Via del Corso exits between the two churches.

We walked down Via del Corso, visiting many shops along the way as well as Piazza di Spangna and the Fontana della Barcaccia (Fountain of the ugly boat), was completed in 1627 by Pietro Bernini and his son Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

The Spanish Steps (Scalinata di Trinità dei Monti) are a set of steps climbing a steep slope between the Piazza di Spangna at the base and Piazza Trinità dei Monti, dominated by the Trinita dei Monti Church at the top.The monumental stairway of 135 steps (the slightly elevated drainage system is often mistaken for the first step) was built with French diplomat Étienne Gueffier’s bequeathed funds of 20,000 scudi, in 1723–1725, linking the Bourbon Spanish Embassy, and the Trinità dei Monti Church that was under the patronage of the Bourbon kings of France, both located above — to the Holy See in Palazzo Monaldeschi located below .

We also visited the beautiful 'Trevi Fountain' {Fontana di Trevi} is a fountain designed by Italian architect Nicola Salvi and completed by Pietro Bracci. Standing 26.3 metres (86 ft) high and 49.15 metres (161.3 ft) wide, it is the largest Baroque fountain in the city and one of the most famous fountains in the world. Of course...we threw in our coins.

After some serious shopping along Via del Corso and I believe we have exceeded our baggage limit, we returned to our accommodation visiting the Fontana del Tritone. This fountain is a seventeenth-century fountain, by the baroque sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

For dinner we went to "La Famiglia" restaurant, opposite our hotel. Many annoying street musicians come to your table, then expect a tip. We enjoyed our meals before returning to our accommodation.

A great tip, we choose to get around Rome with a three day travel pass valued at €11 each. This pass gets you on all buses, trams and the metro.
