Wow, what a full day. Now to relive it in words one more time.
We started the day with the breakfast that was included at the Hampton Inn Hotel
. It wasn't very good but it was FREE.
First stop is the Texas Ranger Museum. The full history on display of the famous Texas Rangers. We learned that the Rangers predate the State of Texas. Throughout the years the Rangers role in Texas law enforcement changed. Yet throughout history they were known for being tough and getting their man. Texas Rangers are credited with tracking Bonnie & Clyde and setup the ambush that brought the deadly duo to their own demise. Their is a story about a Texas town that called for the Rangers to come help with a riot that had broken out as a result of an illegal prize fight. Well one Ranger showed up and the town was concerned it was not enough. The Ranger told the town "one riot, one Ranger".
Next stop was the Dr. Pepper museum in Waco, Texas. Dr. Pepper was developed by a drug store chemist. It was the alternative to Cola or Rootbeer. They advertised a "10, 2, 4" slogan that meant you should have Dr
. Pepper at 10, 2, and 4 to boost your sugar level to keep you from getting tired. Originally Dr. Pepper was referred to as "a Waco", then it was named Dr. Pepper - as it gives you a "Pep".
Time to hit the road for Dallas. We made a little detour in Waxahatchie thinking we could find a place for lunch. We did not see anything that made us want to stop. Cute town that is the "Gingerbread Town". Many of the houses are decorated with wood gingerbread trim. Waxahatchie is also home to a Assembly of God University.
In Dallas we headed straight for the 6th floor museum. We found a downtown grill for lunch and then started our tour of the museum. The 6th floor museum is the museum that commemorates the assassination of President Kennedy in Dallas, in November 1963. The tour is very interesting, including history on JFK, his campaign, election, and presidency. You can see the corner where Lee Harvey Oswald shot from as the motorcade passed the Texas school book depository building
. The tour talks about the various conspiracy theories and the investigations that were conducted. On a prior trip to Dayton Ohio we were able to tour the Air Force One plane that President Kennedy's body was flown back to Washington DC on. When Lee Harvey Oswald was being transferred to court for his arraignment he was shot and killed by Jack Ruby. Ruby was sentenced to death for the killing but died from cancer before he was executed. Well worth a couple hours if you are in Dallas. (Note - they do not allow any pictures in the museum, so that is why you will only see outside pictures here)
On to our final tour of the day. Dallas Cowboys Stadium. We arrived and were amazed at the size and design style of the stadium. It is very sleek and looks very cool. Inside the pro shop is huge with anything and everything for sale with the Dallas Cowboys logo star on it. We began the tour and were able to see the field from every level available. We sat in the luxury suites and even in owner Jerry Jones private "man cave" suite
. He has an elevator that takes him from the field, to his luxury suite and then up one more floor to his private "man cave" suite. We toured the locker rooms for the Cowboys and the Cowboy Cheerleaders. We walked on the field and were able to take pictures everywhere. Oh, and the BIG screen - WOW. It is HUGE and very crisp and clear. The stadium is about 3 years old, cost 1.2 Billion (yes, with a B) to build. The city of Arlington paid $325 million, Jerry Jones paid all the rest. It is an amazing stadium.
Well, everyone is tired (surprise, surprise). We checked into our hotel for the night found a quick bite for dinner and retired for bed. Grace did hit the pool for a little bit, but that just took the last energy she out right out.
Tomorrow we will see a bit of Fort Worth and then drive out of Texas to Oklahoma. Happy Trails.
