Today we go on a tour of the Gili Islands. We are up by 7am and ready for a big breakfast. Load up in readiness for a day full of crazy adventures. Must mentioned that our night sleep was rudely interrupted in the early hours by a bunch of Muslims wailing and chanting at the local Mosque. Very unpleasant!
Our trip starts at 8
.30am from the foyer of our hotel. We are lead to our boat located in one of the villages next to the hotel. Our trip to the Gili will take 1.30 hours, on a boat that looks more like a canoe with an engine and two logs strapped to each side by plastic ropes. I'm sure these are save...this people have been using these canoes for generations and they are still around (in most cases...the same canoes, but with a fresh coat of paint!)
The Gili Islands are an archipelago of three small islands — Gili Trawangan, Gili Meno and Gili Air — just off the northwest coast of Lombok, Indonesia.
The islands are a popular destination for tourists looking for a remote island experience. Each island has several small resorts, usually consisting of a collection of huts for tourists, a small pool and restaurant. Most local inhabitants live on Trawangan in a township stretching along its east side just inland (which is also where most recent development is taking place)
. Automobiles and motorised traffic is prohibited on the islands by local ordinance, so the preferred method of transportation is by foot and bicycle or the horse-drawn carriage called a cidomo. Diving in and around the Gilis is also popular due to the abundance of marine life and attractive coral formations.
We spend the day snorkelling and walking around the islands. Snorkeling was great but we find Not much luxury in the actual islands . These are More suited for the backpacker type of holiday maker.
We find a nice place for lunch and after a stroll around Gili Air we head back to our resort.
Perhaps the thing that we will remember the most will be the amount of rubbish that we encountered on the way and on the actual islands (apparently from a river in Lombok spewing rubbish in to the sea) . Very sad to see that some humans have no regards whatsoever for the damage they do by their selfish and lazy act of discarding their waste by just dumping in the waterways
. Hopefully this will be dealt with before the place become an environmental disaster... Which could well be on the cards without some intervention by the local governments (if they are intelligent enough to see the damage being done)
We return to our resort by 4pm and just in time for more relaxation by the pool. By 5pm we are eagerly awaiting our first cocktail ( happy hour). This will help us get in the mood for dinner.
Dinner is at the resort where we enjoy a "cultural" night of traditional dancing and music (more like a group of guys bashing pots and pans..but hey who am I to judge culture!).
Good dinner (not great). Michelle enjoyed her Prawns Provencele and I my BBQ chicken. Highlight was our desert, a chocolate and a coconut scoop of ice cream.
A great day overall and ready for a good night sleep to do it all again tomorrow....ah aren't holidays great !!!
