Rain, New Province, Mounties' Best Friends

Portage la Prairie, Canada
After finishing the blog last night the rain came hard and steady for several hours. The tent did well with just a minor bit of dampness.
I had a later start then normal at 8:00 am and rode west on Highway 17 .
I did a quick visit to Kakabeka Falls and the security lady said it would be $4.00 to spend the day, but I explained I only wanted a quick photo, so she let me in if I was fast.
I stopped at the Timberland Motel just west of Thunder Bay for a small breakfast. This motel has been a favourite of mine as it is inexpensive, but clean and has a liquor store, post office and restaurant attached. One stop shopping.
There is a display with the description of how Fleming became a famous person because he invented Standard Time.
There were many lumber trucks on the road and since I'm on a bike there is this fantastic aroma of fresh cut lumber everytime one goes by.
I'm starting an animal count as of today. One Lynx running across the road. I saw two dead moose but I won't count them.
I did a diversion off the main highway into Kenora which is a busy little town with a large flotilla of floatplanes. Very interesting place.
And finally on the third day of riding I made it out of Ontario and into Manitoba. And the topography changes almost immediately from rock to flat. The views go on forever.
I was riding on and off with several beautiful tractor trailers with all the horses from the RCMP Musical Ride. The horses are packed in quite tight with three abreast and four rows in each trailer.
I finally made it to Winnipeg and had heard about the Original Pancake House, so stopped for dinner but must say it was disappointing.
Another hour or so, and I found a campground called the Creekside Camping and RV, just outside Poratge La Prairie
Distance for Today 772 Km

Heavy rain here too today!
It's the only thing I can share with you, John!
I'm jocking. I hope it won't last for you. So you crossed your first 'border' and left Ontario. How nice to follow your trip: text and pictures are lovely. I'll be back soon. I hope you wil also meet nice people around. Ciao, Miriam

Say hi to my friends at the Mint
Hi John:

Your blog is extremely addictive. I am impressed. At this rate you will be in Alaska by the end of next week... As you leave Winnipeg wave at my new friends at the Mint.

Cheers,

Sylvain
