Today was so different from the last week. It was not raining when I started in the morning. With long johns electric vest, two sets of gloves I got underway and started south towards Anchorage. Just north of Anchorage I made a decision to alter my planned route and will not visit Homer, Seward and Whittier which are on the Kenai Peninsula. As I sat eating in a McDonalds I realized that there are just too many people in this region and it is so commercialized and that isn't why I come so far. Another reason I decided this is that the forecast for tomorrow is for sunshine and then rain for the balance of the five day forecast, so I want to get south to warmer climates. So I turned east on the Glenn Highway, and what a pleasure that was. Up and down around mountains and rivers flowing in all directions, as well as a very good view of a massive glacier.
I rode to Glenallen, then took the Tok Bypass Road heading north to rejoin the Alaska Highway, where I stopped and took a photograph of the Red Igloo where I had stayed two years ago . It is owned by a remarkable couple who couldn't do more to make you feel welcome. They have free tea and coffee, a complimentary piece of smoked salmon, and the place is immaculate.
On the Alaska Highway I came across a gentleman whose Harley Davidson was broken down with a drive belt that had failed. Within minutes there were four other motorcycles that stopped to see what they could do to help. Three of them were heading west, so it was decided that one of them would try to get a truck sent back to the fellow and take him back to Fairbanks which is the closest city with a Harley Dealer.
Eventually I made it to the Canadian border, at Beaver Creek Yukon, the most westerly community in Canada.
There are four motels in this community, and no camping. So I grabbed the cheapest room I could find.
