My grumpiness of the last few days has lifted somewhat after today's ride.
When I woke up there was a thin cloud layer and as the day went on it became warmer and brighter, and so did my mood!!
I rode for over two hours heading east on the Alaska Highway to one of my favourite places, Burwash Landing, located on Klaune Lake that is topped by Sheep Mountain
. It is such an eye full when travelling through this area. The water on the correct day of sunshine and no wind has the most amazing emerald colour like I have never seen anywhere in the world. I took quite a few pictures, but the "blue" doesn't show through.
I arrived at Haines Junction and went into the tourist information booth to sort out what was next. My plan was to take the highway from this intersection to Haines, then take a ferry from Haines to Skagway, but the ferry runs at 10:00 pm tonight and would deposit me in Skagway at 11:00 pm at night. I don't want to arrive so late at night. So my plan B is to ride further east on the Alaska Highway and turn south to Skagway, stay overnight and catch the 7:00 am ferry to Haines tomorrow morning. This will add about two hundred Kms to my trip, but it allows me to relax this evening in Skagway, and then look around Haines tomorrow. The road to Skagway is one of those memorable roads that everyone should enjoy once in their life. As I was stopped taking a photograph a small tour bus pulled up beside me and asked if he could take my picture for me. Such a nice gesture!
This road starts in the Yukon, then crosses into British Columbia and then 10 Km before it ends, it crosses the US border.
I visited Carcross (named after Caribou Crossing) where the longest continuously operating business exists.
The forecast is for rain again tonight so I am booked into Sergeant Preston's Lodge in Skagway, Alaska.
I took a quick walk up and down the main street and it is full of tourists, mostly from cruise ships that are docked at one end of the main street.
Distance travelled: 391 Km

Remembering Burwash Landing
John, I am entering this on the 25 Aug, after being out of touch wifi-wise, for over a week. I hope you have a system that advises you of entries. I lived in Burwash Landing for several weeks in 1991, and loved the area. As you say, the lake is beyond beautiful. Saw my first grizzley up close and personal near there.
Having hiked the Chilkoot Pass on several occasions, the road down is familiar, and remembered with a chill. We had a hired driver in a 15 pax, and experienced failing brakes on a severe grade. What fun. We are in Spragge, ON., tonight, and supper is ready. Cheers, and ride safe.
