The Plan was to attack Carlisle today, the castle, the cathedral, the city wall and anything else we could conquer.
Even the best formed plans change. The day was warm and misty, developed into rain later, but still warm.
Detoured thru Penrith on the way, pop 14,000. It’s the nearest large town to us and we had been avoiding it. So pleased we went, another delightful town. Wonderful people.
A very large tractor towing a very large flat deck trailer speed thru the narrow Main Street at one stage, see them all the time.
We wandered the shops, still intending to go to Carlisle, however, different retailers we spoke to said they’d do the steamer cruise down Lake (no Lochs here grandchildren, were in England now and they are called Lakes) Ullswater, from Pooley Bridge to Glenridding, and it would have been fantastic if hadn’t been raining by the time we got to Glenridding.
We couldn’t even go up on deck, it was so windy and wet. The steamer, which is not a steamer, it’s diesel now, but called a steamer as that is what it was originally, traveled quite quickly. The autumn colours are becoming more pronounced and the scenery was still pleasant thru the rain, a light rain but driven sideways with the wind.
It was a 2hr return trip, we think we’ll give up on cruises from now on, that’s the second one that forced us to drown our sorrows.
Drove around Pooley Bridge, it’s full of hotels, obviously a summer destination.
Got caught up in a traffic jam on the motorway, found it was caused by a truck which had broken down.
Sounds a boring day, but we did enjoy Penrith, perhaps should have investigated it more.
