San Sabastian

We docked in Puerto Vallarta early this morning and were well on our way out of town. Our destination, San Sabastian, nestled in the beautiful Sierra Madre mountains. This mountain village has only 700 inhabitants. The town is a living museum.

We visited an old world hacienda, which is a home that also has a business of some kind . One of these is now a museum that traces its heritage back several hundred years. There was an interesting presentation, in Spanish, by the owner of the home detailing her heritage, along with clothing, pictures, currency, furniture, etc. from the historical time when the town was at the peak of its prosperity in the 1700s. Our guide did a great job interpreting.

The church dedicated to St. Sabastian was small, intimate, and absolutely beautiful. I hope you can see the exquisite detail.

A coffee roaster and tequila distillery were highlights after a fantastic lunch of authentic Mexican food. No nachos, guacamole, tacos. This was guava juice and salad with jicama, bean soup with Mexican cheese, bacon and sour cream. Next came freshly made corn tortillas, grilled beef, pork and chicken along with polenta rice. Crisp empanadas, pumpkin cheesecake, Mexican hot chocolate and coffee with cinnamon rounded out the meal. Needless to say most of us skipped dinner on the ship tonight .

The small coffee roaster put out some great coffee and the opportunity to purchase Mexican chocolate, candied nuts and seeds. Small operation, family.

We also visited a small family owned and operated silversmith. Father and his 2 sons design and make everything.

The distillery was great, small family operation, no outside sales and marketing but sells every bottle they produce. We actually had a tequila tasting of 7 different kinds, all made from blue agave. Yum! I might have purchased their 5 bottle sample pack but don't tell anyone.

All in all a fun day, no hawking vendors, weather was perfect, everyone had a great time. To cap it off, as we sailed out of the harbor just before sunset, we saw a pod of humpback whales spouting. Couldn't get pics, darn.
