Incheon, South Korea, Seoul

Another fantastic outing. You'll see a few pics that didn't get included in my post on Nagasaki but the rest were taken today. We cruised into port before dawn. Actually had to go through a set of locks built to maintain constant level of water in the harbor. Very different from the beautiful wharves we saw in Japan - more functional, less aesthetic. No welcoming committee.

City of Incheon appears more stark with limited green space . We bussed to Seoul for an all-day outing. It was cold, 27 degrees, but sunny. After visiting the Gyeongbokgung Palace and the National Korean Forklore Museum we had a traditional Korean lunch of kimchee, rice and marinated beef that was served in a hot pot. Before I could get a pic one of those at my table started to serve herself. She was hungry. It was delicious but kimchee won't be my snack of choice.

We had an hour to wander the downtown area for a bit of shopping after lunch. Decisions, decisions. On the way back to the ship we saw the area the police had cordoned off in anticipation of 200,000-300,000 protesters who were expected momentarily to support, or not, the impeachment of the president of South Korea. Everyone seems to have their challenges with government.

Late dinner on the ship then an hour of entertainment by a Taiwanese violin player/singer who was wonderful. Beautiful and young to boot.

Speaking of talent, I happened to be a guest at a table the other night with Marc Oberon, a talented magician . He was within 3' of me and I couldn't tell how he did the tricks he entertained us with. He is performing after dinner tomorrow night for all the passengers.

The president of Holland America has come onboard for a week which promises a fun time for all. Free wine at dinner is a great start.

Please, all my friends and family, forgive me for not calling/emailing more often. The Pacific Ocean is a lot larger than it appears and chasing satellites across the heavens is mainly a waste of time and energy. I don't know if it will get any better but expect it won't measurably improve.

Know that I'm thinking of you all and sending you love and gratitude for making this trip possible by your generous efforts on my behalf. I know how lucky I am, as do the friends I've made onboard who feel as I do. We are all blessed.

Our trip continues to flex as we respond to Mother Nature's whims. We have another day in Korea and then it's off to Beijing arriving Wed., your Tuesday. Had to cancel stop in Jeju because of weather. Our captain puts our safety first. Go figure!!!!!

Every day brings a new adventure. I have so much respect for those who are physically challenged but carry on none-the-less. Sometimes a "few" steps turns out to be several flights of uneven stones. Maintaining your balance on a rocking ship does wonders for increasing your balance capabilities.

You can actually track the ship at www.hollandamerica.com, search for MS Amsterdam.
