As I said, we couldn't moor in Jeju, off the southern tip of Korea, due to weather conditions so we had an additional day in Seoul. Great guide. She has been chosen as one of the premier guides to be trained for next year's Olympics in Seoul. As with so many of our guides she has spent several years in the US but has returned to her homeland for family reasons.
The last minute change of plans allowed us to visit the Noryangjin Fish Market that dates back to 1927
. It is the largest and oldest fish market in Korea with 700 vendors in about 65,000 square feet of space. Pike Street Market I still love you but this was unbelievable. Most everything was live.
They have to import Dungeness crabs, Maine lobsters and Alaskan salmon. Everything else is caught in the 3 oceans. Eel, anyone? Sea cucumbers? Squid, octopus, sea urchins, ........ You can find it here. Appears to cater more to export. Wish I could read Korean. Watched a worker impale eels on a spike then skin them (still alive.) Everything so fresh and clean. Everywhere workers are washing down the surroundings.
The new market is very modern with LED lighting and electronic read outs. The old part can be more creative with larger tanks, a place to sell fruits and vegetables, and where we saw many locals buying fish for dinner.
On to the beautiful National Museum of Korea, very simplistic and having wonderful exhibits of early Korea
. It is the 3rd most visited art museum in Asia and free to the public.
The Namsangol Hanok Village is composed of restored traditional houses to preserve the original atmosphere of the area. Then there is the modern Seoul Tower overlooking everything from the highest point in Seoul.
All 10,000,000 residents appeared to be on the highway for our return to the ship, but courtesy goes a long way. We got back with 15 minutes to dress for dinner. One of our group was celebrating her 81st birthday and I was invited to sit at her special table. Did I mention we had complimentary wine?
Also, the magician entertained us all after dinner. He was great. Looking forward to seeing more from him.
We have a force 10 storm today so getting more balance training. Cruise into China tomorrow evening. By the way, those wrist bands really work well to ward off seasickness.
