This port that was once used by the Phoenicians and later the Romans now serves as Morocco's chief harbor and is the largest of North Africa. Our first stop was the Hassan ll Mosque. Each mosque is different. Hard to get your head around the size and adornments. Mosques have no statues. Allah is represented in all living things so it is forbidden to try to replicate him. The Mosque will hold 25,000 in the prayer rooms and 80,000 in the courtyard. Hearing the calls to prayer has been very interesting and learning the real truth about Islam has been an eye opener for all of us.
So many mosques gave been repurposed over the ages depending on who conquered whom
. That's why so many of the churches and cathedrals still have mosque structure and decoration. So glad it hasn't been obliterated. There is quite a contrast between the mosques and churches with the many, many statues and carvings in Christian churches. The opulence gets to you after awhile.
Mass was going on at the Sacra Couer Cathedral and the Notre Dame Du Lourdes so we couldn't take photos. They were absolutely packed.
The Royal Palace, now occupied by the king is impressive even from the outside. The king is supposedly meeting with president Trump in Florida.
The Place Mahammed V, the main square, was rocking. Just FYI, I didn't buy the CD.
We ambled through the olive market. Unbelievable. Had no idea there were so many varieties. Also lots of bulk spices. Totally different atmosphere from many of the markets we've toured. What an experience. PS, I still don't like olives.
Nice evening spent back aboard with dinner and entertainment. We seem to be getting a bit tired . Guess that's a good thing. One more stop and we head home. I'm ready.
This has been an unbelievable experience and I am so grateful that I was able to undertake it. I'm now ready to hang up my international slippers and put on my hiking boots again.
