Amazing Lake

San Pedro La Laguna, Western Highlands, Guatemala
San Pedro is a small town on the Lake Atitlan. It was
only about 100kms from Antigua but it took 4 hours on a bumpy and windy road.
Junior got a few mozzie bites on Utila Island and a couple of them had got a
bit swollen so we headed to the doctor who put Junior on Antibiotics for 5
days. San Pedro was the perfect place to chill out for 5 days. We stayed at
Casa Lola which was right on the water front with an amazing view. We spent
hours on the balcony in the rocking chairs or the hammocks. It was really beautiful.
The NBA playoffs were on so we found a great sports bar to watch some of the
games.

When Juniors foot got a bit better we ventured out to the other towns around
the lake to check them out. The first day we went to Santiago which was nice
with local market stalls. It was really amazing. Close to the jettys where the
boats leave from some of the buildings are under the water. We asked a local
and he said in the last 2 years the water had risen and that those people had
to abandon the properties. There was a 2 story house where the water was nearly
on the 2nd level also there used to be 150m of garden out the front as well. So
that shows how much the water had risen. When we were there there was a lot of
rain and still very early on in the season. The locals are worried what could
happen in 2 more years.

The next day we checked out San Marcos which is also a popular tourist spot but
a little too hippy for us so we just had breakfast and headed back to San
Pedro.

We spent one more day in San Pedro and then caught the rocky bus back to
Antigua for 1 night to break up the travel time to Lanquin.
