Military Coup

Quito, Ecuador
A long day crossing the boarding into Ecuador. It all went well but got totally ripped off changing our peso´s into USD even after we were warned! You get that I guess. We have learnt another lesson. Border town Tolmer to Quito was $4 for 5 hour bus trip big change from Columbia where travel was so expensive.

We finally arrived at our hostel in Quito after the 1st taxi had no idea where we wanted to go and the second one broke down, typical South America. We had a few wines on the balcony over looking the city to finish off the trip. Stayed at Secret Garden $26 per night for your own room but not worth $26 and crappy showers.

We woke to a military coup in Ecuador we were told not to leave the hostel until further notice. All airports and border crossings were closed. We had only about $10 dollars on us and never knew when we would be able leave the hostel again. We had a great view of the city and could see what was going on. Fires sprung up all over the city where people were burning tyres in protest. That night was crazy with the rumors going around about what was happening out on the streets and the BBC making it out worse than it was, as usual. At one stage we could hear some gun fire which made it pretty surreal.

Spent most of the night chatting with Sarah, Leith and Kath advising them that we were ok.

We were hoping this was not going to last long as our flight to the Galapogos islands was in 2 days.

The next day was strangely fine and we were free to roam the streets with caution. All was good the aiports and boarders were re-opened and we were ready to fly out to the islands the next day.
