So we left La Paz on a overnight bus to Uyuni, where there is nothing at all it's just the starting point for all the tours to the salt flats. The bus was not good it was tiny little up right seats so we didnt sleep all that well. We arrived in town around 530 in the morning and searched around for the best priced tour and again got ripped off. We paid an extra $20 for an English speaking driver but he could hardly speak English at all. You would think we would have learnt that they will say anything to get a sale. Lucky we're fluent at spanish....
There were 7 of us in the land cruiser
. 2 x German, 1 x Japan, 1 x Kiwi, us and the Driver/Tour guide.
Day 1, We left at about 11am and the first stop was a train cemetery which was a heap of old rusty trains that were driven out into the desert and left there about 50 years ago. Then we cruised to the start of the salt flats which was great. We spent some time taking the classic photos sitting on a bottle etc. and saw guys shovelling the salt into a truck like dirt to be sold. Then had lunch at a salt hotel where the tables and chairs were made of salt. They also had a Salt Big Ben and other statues. After lunch we visited the catus island which was in the middle of the salt flast covered in catus. We finished the day at another salt hotel where we stayed the night. Pretty average place and looked nothing like the picture that they showed us when we booked. Pretty cool though everything was made from salt right down to the beds. Not sure if it was for effect or just because its cheaper?
Day 2
. We had an early start and crap breakfast. We headed to Flamingo
lakes which were so beautiful. We visited about 4 and at each one the flamingoes
got pinker. From the distance we could see a volcano which had a little smoke coming
out of it. Pretty cool. Finished the day at another really average hotel in the
middle of no where. We chilled at night drinking wine and playing cards.
Day 3 4am start and it was freezing! We all piled into the cruiser
and had an hour drive to the Geysers and the bubbling mud like Rotuora. Very
cool. Next stop was the hot pools. We had half an hour bath until breakfast which even though it was packed (like every other stop) was still nice. For breakfast we had pancakes. Finally an ok breakfast. After we hoped back into the cruiser and headed for the Chilian Boarder. 1.5hrs. From there Junior and I got a bus from Bolivian boarder the the Chilian Boarder. We got through the
boarder and then reached San Pedro which was a cool little town not much to do
but nice and relaxing as its been a pretty full on few weeks we just chilled all arvo in hammocks.
