Should have booked a bus

Calama, Chile
We headed into town trying to find a bus to Santiago but silly us didn't think about Christmas and all the buses were fully booked out. We thought of all different types of options to get us down to Santiago for Christmas and the best idea was Hitchhiking. They say Chile is the safest country in South America to hitchhike in and is quite common. We stocked up on Water and headed to the Panamericana Highway. A few cars went past but they didn’t look very interested and then we saw our first truck coming so out goes the thumb and he pulls over. He was only going 3 hours to Antofagasta so we thought that was better than nothing even though we wanted to go 13 hours south. We threw our packs in and Junior sat on his bed and I rode shot gun. With our limited Spanish it was a pretty quiet ride. He dropped us off at his turn off and we waited. After about 2 hours we decided to get the next truck into the closest town and stay there for the night as it was getting a bit late. So within 2 mins we were back in another truck. He just dropped us off at his truck depot and we caught a local collectivo bus into the town centre so we could find a hostel for the night.
