We arrived in La Paz at about 7am and it was 0 degrees, we checked into out hostel and enjoyed a free pancake breakfast and then hit the bed for a few hours.
After a short sleep we headed into town to sort out tour companies for the worlds deadliest road. We went to about 20 companies to get a good idea what was out there. At night we went out to dinner at another one of those children's looking restaurants but it was really busy as it was women’s days.
The next day we checked out and move to the Wild Rover this is the hostel that we stayed at last time we were in La Paz. Wild Rover is a very western hostel but its really cheap and great western good for a change. I left my awesome new wet weather jacket in taxi on the way to the Wild Rover and of course did not get it back.
We spent a few days just chilling out in La Paz as the last few weeks we had been on the move quite lot. We met a group of people in hostel that were all keen to check out this death road so booked though Vertigo which was 450BOB about $60US. We got picked up at 8am and I must say the head was a tad sore and Junior had a really sore neck. We drove for about 90 mins to the top of this mountain which was freezing. We got all geared up in our protective gear (elbow/knee pads, full face helmet and thick pants and jacket. After the safety brief it was time to hit the road. The first past was on paved road which was about 45 mins and then it was time for a quick snack before we hit the actual death road.
I was a bit shakey to start with and it took me a while to get used to the gravel road but Junior was off in the first group. We got heaps of photos taken from the most dangerous parts. The road used to be a lot more dangerous but now there is no traffic on the road which made me feel a bit better. We rode down for about 3 hours and then our minivan that followed us the whole way took us to a hotel for a buffet lunch and a shower. When we all got back to the hostel at about 8pm and we were all shattered and Junior still had a sore neck this resulted in a early night which I was more than happy to do as we had a flight to the Amazon the next morning.
