Vallegrande is the town where Che Guevara was set on display for international media after he was executed in a near-by village, it's also where he was buried in a mass grave under the towns airport runway for 30 years. We arrived just in time for the tourist information to close for siesta which reopened 3 hours later so we went for a bit of a walk then just chilled near the main square. We ended up doing the tour to Che's grave which is now a massive monument and to the hospital laundry where he was put on display when he was dead.
There was not much to do in VG so after the tour we caught the local bus 3 hours to Mataral which again was a small town but was on the route for buses to Sucre our next destination
. We arrived about 7.30pm and were having dinner so missed the next bus to Sucre. After dinner we thought we better get to the road so we could flag down the next bus. The next one was also full so we got a bit worried that they all could be full. We could see one more coming so Junior ran over and they also said they were full but he could fit 3 people in between the driver the spare driver. At this time we thought this was a good idea as we didn’t want to get stranded in this tiny town.
A few minutes in we find out that it's a 9 hour bus trip and within 10mins our bums were already sore from sitting on the floor. It was going to be a long night. About half hour later we hit unpaved road and later found out that the next 8 hours was on unpaved roads. We'd heard there was two roads to take the new one and the old one so we assumed this was the old one but the driver said no this is the new one so we can't imagine what the old one was like. It was high in the mountains with roads wrapping around and around and around
. The driver who was 20 and had been driving buses for 4 years already loved very interesting music for such a young guy. Junior asked him what other music he liked and he said romantic so you can all guess what Junior put on yes, Lionel Ritchie.
Finally the bus stopped for a toilet stop and a driver change. The toilet stop was just on the side of the road. I noticed that they had opened one of the outside baggage holds and kinda thought they had let a dog out which wouldn’t surprise me. Once we get back into the bus the spare driver was still sitting in the spare diver seat but about 20 mins in Junior goes I don’t this that’s the same driver and I was like I thought that as well and then we find out there was a third driver sleeping in the baggage hold who finishes the last 4 hours.
We arrived in Sucre at 5.30am and shattered Junior and I had not slept, Anj who we were with got about 4 hours as someone got out just before the toilet stop so she got the seat.
