In search of black swans

Valdivia, Lake District, Chile
The sunrise is spectacular.
The area is beautiful and years later when I read the book The Road Less Travelled, I find out that this area is similar to the famous French Lake District. I have not been to France, but if it is similar to this area it is definitely worth visiting.

We eat pies with olives in it. We buy gigantic grapes and find that fresh fruit is available and cheap. You can even buy cheese from a street seller. In Valdivia we turn in the direction of the river and discover a market by chance. The variety of fresh fish, shrimps, mussels and other sea food is astounding (some unknown types!!) We decide to go on a boat trip at sunset, but we first have to find place to sleep, the Hostelaria Prat will have to do. As the price shrinks so does the bano, the room and bed size and even the size of the TV is adjusted!!

The boat trip starts at 3:30 and will last 4 hours. In the group we have 4 Germans and 1 Chilean lady. The tour guide is Spanish and then he translates to German. One of the German ladies worked for Lufthansa and she translates the info for us. The tour guide will start with 10 sentences in Spanish, translate it to 5 German sentences and we get the info in one English sentence...wonder if we missed much?!?!?!

We see black-necked swans, endemic to Chili. They will pair for life. When one is killed the other will stop eating and will die shortly after .They also keep their young in the nest for a long time. The family will stay together until the chick is ready to mate. 4-7 eggs will be laid - a family group consists of 6-9 swans... there are many swans around the boat. We also see herons and other water birds. As we enter the harbour they play a song about the Luna (moon) and two lovers....my Spanish vocabulary is growing!!

Tonight we eat Salmon fritoarros o patas with salada...and for those "unspanish" amongst us, it is not salmon with chips - it is salmon fried in oil with arros(rice) or patas (potato)..the salmon was at least correct.
