Tikal National Park, Guatemala
We made it to Tikal! After a full flight from Boston to Miami, a less full flight from Miami to Guatemala, and 6 of us on the prop plane from Guatemala City to Flores...it feels great to be here. We met a nice couple while boarding the prop plane - she mentioned that she was going to carry her passport so they could identify her body. It was definitely an interesting flight. All was well until Roger nearly caused an international incident because he brought an apple from home. "Prohibited"! Our driver picked us up and brought us the hour or so to Tikal Park. Along the way, we drove through a number of little "villages" and noticed groups of people and music. Apparently there are 2 major religions "Ka-to-lic" and "Ee-van-ja-leea". In this case, I'd rather be Catholic, they only go to church on Sundays. The Evangelists, go EVERY night. It was amazing to see how many people were packed into those little churches though.

As we neared the Park, we saw some caution signs for animals that might be in the road . Cow...Deer...Turkey...Jaguar...Coatimundi...Snake... We're definitely not in Maine anymore! We arrived at the Tikal Inn around 8:00; it's rustic but the grounds seem beautiful, even in the dark. We went to the restaurant on site for a bite to eat and headed back to our room. Unfortunately we didn't know we'd have a roommate...one with a bunch of legs. Yep, our bags were open for about an hour and we already had a cockroach checking the stuff out. Roger tried to kill it but it ran under the bed. I'm currently in the other bed but watching vigilantly in that direction. *sigh*
