Sand dune bashing

Doha, Doha, Qatar
An early start this morning for a southerly drive for a 4x4 dune bashing roller coaster ride in the desert, passing on our way the oil and gas plants that are the source of the wealth of this tiny promontory half the size of Wales. Here was the desert that we all have in our minds. vast dunes with a thin layer of soft sand shimmering and hovering on the surface in the breeze coming off the sea. We stopped to admire the inland sea and in the distance, like Mordor,we could see Saudi Arabia. We stopped for lunch in a camp by the sea and Kevin had a snooze in our Bedouin tent to recover from the ordeal and/or his previous night's works football Xmas meal!
A short drive back to the Tarmac where we had to pump up our tyres and thankfully all the traffic was heading into the dunes as the Qatari head back into the desert to rediscover their roots . The contrast between Doha the city and its countryside is remarkable and surreal. Also surreal was the cost of a bottle of wine in the restaurant but it was worth it and we did have a BOGOF voucher for a main course.
