Black River, Black River, Mauritius
This morning we travelled up into the mountains , a few hairpin bends allowed us a fine view of Miranda's old island home until we reached Chamarel. A superb waterfall as tall as the Statue of Liberty cascading down into the gorge below and then the seven coloured earth sand dunes, a unique geological spot where no plants grow. Miranda said it wasn't that long ago that you could scramble down to the falls and walk on the dunes but now it's all fenced off to preserve it. The whole area is being improved by removing invasive species and replacing with indigenous flora. In addition there were some 100 year old tortoises from The Seychelles as all the Mauritian ones had suffered the same fate as the dodo.
In the evening Miranda's friend Jean came to dinner and we all enjoyed a pilaff made from the turkey and roast veg left over from yesterday and watched the sunset and even more fireworks!
