Black River, Black River, Mauritius
The day started well. iPad retrieved and tyre mended on our way to Port Louis ,although we had to take the tyre for a specialised repair to a one man band in the delightfully named town of Bamboo and typical of the old Mauritius. Some sugar cane fields opposite,an old village cafe, bits of junk about and a long shady street. We stopped on the way at yet another mall and found another shopping name from the past and a wide choice of snacks. Port Louis is the major port and has old waterfront buildings combined with new to provide the tourists with more shops than you can shake a stick at and waterside bars and restaurants. We visited the Blue Penny museum with an interesting collection of old maps showing Mauritius from the mid 1500s,some interesting history about the English/French conflict of 1810 and, more importantly some of the rarest and most valuable on earth, indeed the 2 most important are only lit for 10mins an hour. Surprisingly,Mauritius was the 5th country and first colony to issue stamps.
