Colombo, Western Province, Sri Lanka
A glorious morning and as we ate our breakfast we watched a container ship dock and a noticed a cruise ship had arrived in the night. It was full of Americans as a crowd of them came in for tea and coffee prior to a tour of Colombo. We met a couple of them as we strolled around the old colonial quarter, visiting the old garrison church attached to our hotel that was built in 1837 as a barracks and taking a more in depth look at the old banks and government buildings that for 20 years were all closed behind gates. A security guard let us inside the old post office where we marvelled at the stained glass and counters all being renovated and it will take 2 more years. Next on the list was the old Dutch hospital transformed into boutiques and restaurants where we had lunch under the veranda roof.It was quite odd but they have Sunday licensing laws here and we had to order our second beer before 2pm,come back at 5 and we could have another. A short walk back to the hotel noticing some architecture we had missed before on our walks. With a cup of coffee and a muffin we use up all but 75p in rupees, now to have fun with yen in the morning after an overnight flight.
