Shibuya-ku, Tōkyō-to, Japan
A cloudy morning as we said goodbye to Mount Fuji. Our guide said we had been lucky with the weather as sometimes on tours it is too cloudy to see it. We took the special train back to civilisation and in 2 hours we were in Tokyo,a vast concrete city with overhead railways and motorways. We visited Takeshita Dori,a narrow shopping street heaving with people and fast food restaurants,a bit like Camden market.Close by is the famous scramble street crossing when the lights go green everyone crosses the road from all directions. A quick trip up the municipal building for a panoramic view of all the city's skyscrapers, shame about the smog which prevents another view of Mount Fuji these days. After a train ride or two we arrived at Ueno famous for its cherry blossom which has just come out this week. There was a real party atmosphere as people picnicked under the blossom and there was even a live Japanese TV show being beamed live too. To finish the sightseeing for today we went to Obaida,a fairly recent man made island in Tokyo bay where we had a beautiful view of tokyo's lights and skyline across the bay. One surprise was to find a Statue of Liberty donated by the French a few years ago.
