Shibuya-ku, Tōkyō-to, Japan
A farewell breakfast at Starbucks with the stragglers from our tour before checking out of the group hotel and off to find our new one for the next couple of days. It was time for some more sedate sightseeing after the last two weeks. First we went to Asakusa to visit the Sensoji shrine. It has been here for over 1400 years and has a massive hanging lantern in its gate. There are lovely old shops and street market stalls. Sebastian purchased a kimono and Kate a belt for hers and we enjoyed a beer and fried chicken in a street cafe watching the crowds passing by. 3 stops along the subway and we were back in Ueno park with all its cherry blossom and picnicking locals. It was so busy we weren't able to meet up with Joanne from our tour at the time arranged ( she was late too it transpired ),however we went to the museum of western art which was a bit of a Rodin fest with about 10 sculptures. There was a room full of Monets and 3 Gauguins too. Most of the collection came from one Japanese collector who lived in Paris and had it seized by the French authorities as war loot but returned in the late 1950's. A cup of coffee and cake revived us for our return into the city where we got off at the old main station which has been renovated to check out where we have to go to catch the airport train and to see if we could find a Picasso exhibition that we thought was on there. We found the train but not the art but the station had a warren of restaurants below ground so one for tomorrow perhaps although a few yards from our hotel we found a Belgian bar so we had moules frites with proper beer!
