Hoi An

Tp. Hội An, Quảng Nam, Vietnam
After breakfast we left for a 4 hour bus journey South towards Hoi An,another world heritage site, the old town managed to stay virtually intact throughout the Vietnamese wars and is full of old wooden houses from the 18th century and earlier plus some small scale French colonial buildings. But first we climbed some steep hills shrouded in mist through the Hai Van Pass and stopped to look at some old imperial lookouts and more modern bunkers and secondly we passed the old US airbase in Da Nang. The city now has vast US hotels all along its sandy shore and a booming economy. Thankfully Hoi An remains a sleepy little town full of interesting shops. Kate bought a Kipling handbag and a bespoke tailored shirt and Sebastian a couple of t-shirts. There was very little of the high pressure selling we have found everywhere else.
