Tp. Hội An, Quảng Nam, Vietnam
This morning we went on a motorcycle tour of one of the island communities. We boarded the public bus with our motorbike driver as were riding pillion. we went at a very sedate pace as we followed some of our party who rode mountain bikes. As we passed through the paddy fields and hamlets everyone waved and said hello. We stopped to watch the rice harvest being brought in,avoided the rice and reeds drying on mats in the road and reached our first destination, the village rice wine maker. The owner had lost his leg in Cambodia fighting pol pot and rice wine was his only feasible source of income at the time. He also sang us a song, the wine tasting was a jolly affair. We then walked across the road to look at a family making reed mats. They can make 2 a day between them for a net income of 4 US$ each which isn't bad for round here. Their peanuts were also drying in the sun. For lunch we saw some rice noodles being made and again ate the results. Upon our return a quick swim before Kate went for a full body massage.
In the evening we went to a Vietnamese cooking school . As is usual our teacher took us to a local market to look at all the wonderful fruit and veg grown locally where we bought some of the food we were to cook. We ha.d a great time cooking, drinking and eating until it was time to waddle back to the hotel where we sat on our balcony watching the world go by drinking our white wine.
