The killing fields

Phnom Penh, Cambodia
Today we visited S21 the Kmer Rouge prison housed in an old secondary school in the city centre where 17000 people were tortured prior to being taken to the killing fields to be murdered. That was our second stop where we walked amongst the mass graves trying not to step on the bones and bits of clothing that come to the surface with the passage of time. One cannot begin to comprehend the madness that descended upon this land of Buddhists. The monument houses 100's of skulls and is a chilling visual reminder and their is an air of peace around with birds and butterflies flying around.
Upon our return to the city we had lunch in a typical noodle restaurant and then walked along the river and through the market . We followed a lady with a basket of fish who had alighted from her boat and was off to sell her catch.
