Krong Siem Reap, Siem Reap, Cambodia
A more leisurely start today (8am!) for a second day of visiting some of the 100's of temples in the area. It is difficult to believe that at the time of the battle of Hastings a million people lived in the area and that the city covered an area the size of LA.
The first temple was the one known as the Tomb Raider temple as it was used in the film of that name . We walked through the jungle to the East gate to avoid the crowds using the North gate. We had to keep to the path as there are still land mines around left over from their civil war. The temple is extraordinary as there are huge trees growing through the ruins. On our way to the second temple we stopped to look at the elephant terrace which in its day was the sports and victory parade grandstand. The second temple has large Garuda carvings around the outer wall,an eagle like creature killing a snake (similar to Aztec/Mayan culture of the same era) and a unique Hellenic pavillion. On the way to these major sites we passed more equally impressive temples in the jungle some being restored and others left to themselves.
On our return to the hotel we were all so hot from the searing heat and humidity our guide suggested a pool pizza party which was eagerly agreed upon. For our final evening in Siem Reap we all took a Tuktuk to the appropriately named Pub St first to the Temple Bar for a final Cambodian meal with a traditional dance show and our guide Ratta from our Thailand,Lao and Vietnam trip joined us as he was back home visiting his mum. After that it was a short walk through the buzzy streets past the tuktuk touts and occasional begging children to the Triangle bar (it's its shape,a corner building) for a final beer listening to a dire covers band. An earlyish bedtime as it's a 7am start for the drive to Bangkok.
