Nata, Gauteng, Botswana
A very early start so dawn broke as we neared the border and we could see that the landscape was flat scrubby bush with red earth. We did see some giraffes and kudus on our way. The border crossing was surprisingly easy and we crossed the Limpopo river into Botswana over a little bridge. The countryside stayed the same but now we saw cattle everywhere and had to take care as they wandered across the road. After lunch as we continued driving the terrain changed, the termite mounds went from red to white and the bush became more sparse and the bushes smaller. We turned down a sandy track to our tented accommodation to find a dozen or so young male elephants all gathered around a watering hole. Our tents were set up on stilts and overlooked it. We sat in the late afternoon sun, beer in hand watching as they jostled for their turn by the water. Elephants came and went having drunk and washed. Every now and then there would be snorts and fights. In total there must have been at least 50 during the course of the day.A magical moment.
