Victoria Falls day 1

Livingstone, Gauteng, Zambia
At breakfast we were treated to the sight of a herd of kudus using the water hole, which is quite rare due to the elephants always being around. Then it was time for our drive up to the ferry to take us across the Zambezi river into Zambia. At this crossing 4 countries meet, Botswana, Zambia,South Africa and a tiny spit of Namibia which gave them access to the great river that flows ever so gently to the Falls whereupon it turns into one of the wonders of the world. A short drive from the border passing traditional African round houses in villages, through Livingstone ,a substantial ,quite modern and prosperous looking with children in smart uniforms returning home to our destination,Victoria Falls. From afar you can hear the water thundering over into the deep gorge below and see a mushroom like cloud of vapour rising into the sky. However it is only when you walk down a little path do you actually see it. All benign as it flows towards the rim and then a vast deluge 100's of yards wide crashing down into a tiny gorge below. Across the gorge a wonderful bridge connects Zambia with Zimbabwe, the only bridge that takes trains, vehicles and pedestrians apparently. Walking alongside the Falls will get you soaked particularly as there is an open bridge to a small island like a rocky cylinder. From there there is a great view of the bridge, the Falls and the Zimbabwe side where tourists are also viewing the falls.
In the early afternoon we took a sunset cruise upstream where we saw elephants swimming across the river, although they waited for us to get well away from them. There were plenty of hippos too opening their huge mouths and blowing out water. As there was unlimited drink on board it was quite a party with some new arrivals on our tour and a farewell to our original 3 fellow passengers who were now going on into Zimbabwe. When we disembarked we carried on the party on the terrace overlooking the river the falls booming away half a mile away.
