Maun, North West, Botswana
This morning we went for a walk around the village with a guide who showed us a new library that puts us to shame. Senior members of the village were doing computer skills and people were coming into borrow books. Another room was set aside for the children of the village for homework and after school clubs as most houses do not have electricity s they rely on wood for cooking. We then went to one of the two primary in the village where Kate led them all in a Heads, shoulders, knees and toes. The children were great and demonstrated their skills. All education is free in Botswana ,as is healthcare but they have yet to build on their new skills. One lady in the village does simple leather work where sebastian bought a belt and there was another who makes baskets but apart from that no other handicrafts.Everything revolves around their cattle. Following our walk we drove to Maun, the third largest town in Botswana with a population of 70000. Here the main income is tourism as it is the gateway to the Okavango delta, the largest inland delta on earth. After lunch we took a flight over the delta and could see all the small channels and islands. There were plenty of animals to be seen, herds of elephants, hippopotamus and zebras were easy to spot but there were also different antelopes and an occasional giraffe.
