Palapye, Central, Botswana
An early start as we had a long day's drive ahead heading towards South Africa and the end of the tour. We skirted along the edge of the kalahari desert, the countryside the sandy arid bush we have been used to. We saw the obligatory herd of elephants but a family of meerkats merited a stop as did a dried up lake now a salt pan. In 1982 a fishing village survived here but a drought put an end to the lake. However 2 out of the 3 diamond mines that provide Botswana with its wealth are visible so provide employment. In the early afternoon we arrived at a Rhino sanctuary, started in 1989 when the rhino population was down to 4 in the country. Now it stands at 60 and we were delighted to see over 20 of these wonderful beasts. The Rhinos survive as it is next to a Botswana army base and have never suffered any poaching. We also saw ostriches, warthogs and many kinds of antelopes. A short drive to our hotel passing a power station that only works part time for some reason because we had yet another power cut but this is africa.
