Cape Town, Western Cape, South Africa
This morning we boarded the city bus tour of Cape Town. In the city centre we took advantage of two linked walking tours, one of the inner city centre and secondly Bo-Kaap,the city's Malay quarter which is a bit of a misnomer as it is the Moslem quarter.
The city centre walk took us past some old colonial buildings, the Dutch East India company's gardens, parliament and the city hall where nelson Mandela made his first speech as a free man . On the bus tour we went through District 6 the multicultural area that the government bulldozed in the 50's for a white suburb that never got built and still to this day is mostly grassed over. The Bo-Kaap area is a wonderful collection of old houses all painted in bright colours with original cobble stones on the roads and a great place to stroll around.
We continued our bus tour up to the cable car station on table mountain and basked in the afternoon sunshine taking in the glorious panoramic view of the city and sea. At the next stop we were stunned when Craig, who we met on our tour of Japan, appeared at the top of the stairs of the bus.We knew he was coming to Cape Town to start a tour of Southern Africa but still an amazing coincidence. To cap off a great day there was macaroni cheese and a log fire to sit by whist sipping a local wine.
