Shiraz, Shiraz, Iran
this morning we drove out into the countryside to Persepolis, the royal palace of Darius and his dynasty which flourished until Alexander the Great sacked it. fighting our way through the crowds we managed to see the highlights. not much is left standing but the sheer size of the site and the wall reliefs are truly awesome. after lunch we visited the site of the Royal rock cave tombs which reminded us of Petra. a few hundred years later the Safavid dynasty added carvings after the defeat of a Roman invasion.upon our return to Shiraz we stopped by the iconic Koran gate where once you could read the Koran to guide you on your journey, next was a shrine to a descendent of Mohammed with its mirrored walls and ceiling and the ladies had to don abayas. the interior of the shine sparkled with mirrored walls. the courtyard was a cemetery and very expensive to have a plot there and relatives would come and lay flowers on the graves.finally we went to a carpet gallery where we bought a Persian carpet of course, how could we not?
