Rivière Noire, Rivière Noire, Mauritius
This morning the weather seemed ok so we headed north across the plateau in the middle of the island. this is a part of the island the tourists never see. small villages of half built concrete houses, partially painted with what look like overgrown gardens which are mainly chou-chou a popular local marrow-like veg. very narrow roads wend their way through sugar cane and it always seem to be raining. thankfully we soon descended into the sunnier coastal region where the best cane is grown. due to the rain there is no need to irrigate and they get two crops a year unlike the west where miranda lives. We stopped to visit a basket shop which has been in business for over 100 years and we all bought something. it was exceptional value. next it was a hare krishna temple that was built on land given by anjali's uncle. it can be seen clearly from anjali's small house which was the main purpose of our visit. it used to be her grandfather's field office in his cane fields. the land has now been divided up and belongs to various cousins etc but gautam pointed out their cane in the distance. the building is surrounded by various very old fruit trees. the almond tree seemed to be popular with the weaver birds as their nests filled the canopy and old ones littered the floor. Anjali and gautam are updating the building and gardens to eventually make a nice little holiday home. After a drink and snacks we went to Belmare,a seaside area with a lovely beach. the eastern side of the island is exceptionally windy and not recommended for a holiday even though there a couple of luxury hotels nearby. On our return we decided to buy some pizzas from a van parked up in the old salt pans and enjoyed the sunset for the penultimate time
