Zanzibar Town, Zanzibar Urban/West Region, Tanzania
a leisurely breakfast wishing a fond farewell to our fellow travellers before our taxi to the local airport. a very small affair where check-in was a small window and the luggage was weighed on what looked like an old railway platform machine. luggage was all lugged through by hand onto a trolley which was then pushed to the plane.the departure lounge was merely some seats under a corrugated iron roof. we walked across to the plane with others close by with their props running, a real health and safety nightmare but it work. a one hour flight to stone town in zanzibar was sadly through cloud so no view of mount kilimanjaro. a short taxi drive to our hotel right in the old quarter with our driver giving us a good quote for our taxi north on monday. one slight hiccup is that the hotel had been advised that a single room was required but we showed them our paperwork so hope for the best. the room we have is lovely, all old furniture,a lovely sunken bath shower and a view of the pool which is in the hotel's central courtyard.
after a welcome shower we crossed the road from our hotel to the africa house hotel, once the haunt of royal navy officers back in the day .it has a terrace bar overlooking the indian ocean and is The place to watch the sunset over the indian ocean. a short walk found us in an excellent indian restaurant inside an old arab building with an exquisite front door brought all the way from india 100's of years ago. it still has the solid metal studs used to defend itself from elephants.
