Kyaikto, Mon State, Myanmar
our first full day and we set off to visit Yangon's famous stupa,Shwedagon.A most impressive complex of buddhas and stupas with fantastic views across the city. Driving out of the city we stopped at the second world war memorial to the 60 thousand commonwealth troops who died in the Burma campaign. The upkeep was impeccable and a time for reflection before the chaos of the fresh food market we visited next. By now we left the city and drove through a fertile flat land with paddy fields until we crossed a big river when the countryside changed to hills and rubber plantations. we arrived at a small town where we boarded the local truck bus to take us up the rollercoaster road up to the golden rock pagoda, one of the must sees of burma. it is a festival so locals had gathered to stay the night in the complex. After our meal we could hear the devotional prayers and sermons broadcast as or hotel is right by the entrance to the pagoda complex.
