Off to lake inle

Kalaw, Shan
After a couple of hours driving through gently rolling agricultural we reached Pindaya, home of the golden cave. 8000 plus buddhas of all shapes and sizes in a large cavern complex with stalactites and stalagmites. An extraordinary sight. Below is the village with a vast pagoda complex of stupas. Just by the complex was a paper and umbrella family concern and we were shown both processes. Then it was further down the hills until we reached a rich agricultural area around Inle lake. Time was the people lived by fishing but due to deforestation too much sediment has been deposited and the lake is becoming silted up. Since we have been here burmese wine has been on most menus and this afternoon we were able to visit one of two wineries in the country. We piled into a tuk-tuk and drove towards the mountains which dominate this valley. As soon as we encountered a slope ,essential for grapes, our vehicle really struggled but we got there. The wines were indifferent at best but a late harvest muscat would go well with a curry, not that they are very spicy. To cap a bit of a surreal day we went to the local italian restaurant. The maitre d insisted we go into the kitchen to look at his wood oven and pasta machine. He also showed us all the imported cheese and hams with great pride. The food was delicious.
