Onwards to Mallang

Kota Yogyakarta, Daerah Istimewa Yogyakarta, Indonesia
Another 8 hour train journey today to Mallang. We sped quickly across the flat fertile land ,mostly rice fields, with an active volcano in the distance, thin wisps of smoke around the rim. Towards the end of the journey we started climbing and so the crops changed to mixed veg and tropical fruit. At the station we were met by two old 4x4 cars which took us through the rush hour traffic and in an hour we were were climbing up what was the rim of a lava flow as even in the dusk and cloud we could see a precipitous drop either side of our one lane road. In between the trees we could see neat rows of crops. When we arrived at our homestay village for the night perched on the rim of a huge caldera 2500 metres up in the clouds we had a home cooked meal in a room warmed by a charcoal fire .After dinner we went straight to bed at 7.30 as we had to be up ready for a 2o'clock departure to witness the sun rise over mount Bromo.
