Kabupaten Gianyar, Bali, Indonesia
After a leisurely breakfast, some of our party headed straight to the pools whilst we ventured out to a local art museum past the monkey sanctuary and the shops with their offerings on the pavement. We visited the agung rai museum of art. He started selling local art to tourists back in the day,was very successful and built up a collection of art from visiting artists, traditional balinese art and also sponsored walter spies,a german artist who unfortunately for him was interned by the russians in WW1, dutch in WW2 and sunk in a pow ship by the japanese.
The collection is now available to all to see .Some lovely gardens and buildings on the campus with a really good cafe too. What was fascinating for us was that the traditional paintings were either referencing hindu stories we had seen in various temples or the agrarian life style we had witnessed and in particular the rituals involving the barongs. We have seen them being made for next weeks festival everywhere on the island apart from Ubud, the party town. On the way back we paused to look at the monkeys playing in a fountain by their jungle sanctuary.
There was just time for a quick cooling swim before the black clouds that had been getting ever closer opened up with a few claps of thunder so it was time to sit out on our sheltered balcony with a cup of hot chocolate.
We were a bit late going to dinner as one of our party was bitten by a monkey in the street (quite randomly) and had to go and have a rabies shot. She was well enough to go to a bar after with us all where an excellent rock covers band played most of our requests. Not to late back as we leave early tomorrow.
