Dalkeith, Western Australia, Australia
We set off a bit later than planned as Kate was feeling a little unwell. The freeway south passes through a flat sandy landscape with fields of rough pasture and trees with cows and horses finding shade where they can. It has been a wet autumn here and rivers have water and it is much greener than we expected. Our first stop was Bunbury, the first town of note, plenty of eateries in a typical Australian bungalow dominated town centre. We had a short walk along the beautifully sandy beach before making tracks for Busselton, famous for its long wooden jetty. The second longest in the world after Southend pier and it also has a train service to the end where there is an underwater reef viewing tower. You descend a circular staircase and can look through special windows at various depths. Lots of little fish and big fish swimming about and colourful sponges colonising the various pillars of the pier. We even saw a large Samson fish swallow a salmon whole. Our guide said he'd never seen that before. We took the last train back as the sun started to set which it did as we reached the youth hostel in Dunsborough our accommodation for the night.
