Margaret River, Western Australia, Australia
After a leisurely breakfast in Margaret River we drove back towards the coast to Prevelly beach and Surfers Point where a big surfing competition is currently taking place. There were a few surfers about in the bay but nothing fancy to watch. The margaret river mouth was nearby with a coffee in a kombi chap for our elevenses. Surprisingly the river does not empty in to the sea as a big sand bar acts as a dam. Apparently this prevents the river's eco system from salt damage all the way upstream. Travelling south we drove through the Boranup Karrri Forest,a vast forest of 60 m high karri trees. We had to brake suddenly to avoid an emu running across the road, sadly a kangaroo was not so lucky, lying dead on the verge as we passed. Not the way we had planned to see our first roo. These beautifully brown and grey mottled trees were a big export in the area with railways down to jetties in Hamelin bay and down to Augusta. Virtually all traces of these have disappeared as when we visited Hamelin beach it was virtually deserted,as was the wonderfully named Cosy Corner, windy would have been a better name. Carrying on down to the end of Caves Road we reached Cape Leeuwin, the most south westerly point in Australia where the Indian Ocean meets the Southern Ocean. A tall lighthouse dominates the cape and was the inspiration for the book Light between Oceans. Nearby was a slowly decaying water wheel used during the construction and early operation of the lighthouse. There was also the chance to drive along the wonderfully named Skippy Rock road to see the eponymous rock. A great disappointment as it didn't look like skippy at all. As our accommodation in Augusta has cooking facilities we went to the supermarket for our supper and found a "stickered" roast chicken...a whole 2$ saving!
