Pemberton, Western Australia, Australia
We now leave the indian ocean coastline and cross over onto the southern ocean coastline. Our drive took us through mile upon mile of forest with the occasional farmstead. Sadly we saw several dead kangaroos by the roadside and have yet to see a living one bouncing about.
Our first stop was Nannup,a town of typical wooden bungalows, nestled in a river valley . We wanted to buy some bread for a picnic but we were not successful as they had sold out by 11o'clock. Still we had a saturday market to wander around and kate bought a second hand book and we enjoyed an coffee from one of the many cafes. We took a scenic route through the blackwood river valley, beautiful trees and a very windy road but it did lead us to Greenbushes. A charming small town with a few heritage buildings and an interesting discovery centre where we discovered this town was very important as a mining and lumber centre. Timber was not a surprise but a massive tin mine was. We climbed up a little ridge and their was a massive open cast mine but the mining now takes place underground. We were also able to buy some proper bread which we had a few minutes down the road in the next town overlooking the old railway station. Just before we reached our motel we took a detour to see the Gloucester tree, used by the forestry service as a fire lookout. Amazingly you can climb this 53m tree using metal pegs up to the viewing platform,Sebastian climbed a little way but people were descending so we walked along a bush walk through the trees instead.
