Perth, Western Australia, Australia
Today was our drive back to Perth ready for our flight to Adelaide. We drove uphill past the cold climate wineries and a large sandalwood factory into forests until we reached a plateau of mixed pasture for sheep and wheat fields. Large land trains loaded with logs passed on their way to sawmills. We stopped at Kojonup, itself founded in 1837 for coffee and a walk around a rose maze where three different women's stories were interwoven,an aborigine,a pioneering english woman and a mid century italian. Fascinating to read of their experiences,it wasn't a bed of roses for either of them. Our next stop was Williams, a sheep station with an interpretive wool shed. The rise and fall of the sheep industry here over 200 years was very interesting,20 sheep in 1788 to millions today. We finally arrived in Perth at our friend Paula's who we had met in Vietnam after several wrong turnings, new roads and confusing signs! It all looked straight forward on google maps! We had dinner in the Rose and Crown,a pub that dates from 1841 with a real olde world cellar and tunnel to the swan river for contraband back in the day.
