A very long drive today, passing through Ankara for us to pay our respects to Kamal Ataturk, the founder of the modern state of Turkey, following the collapse of the Ottoman Empire at the end of the First World War. We were lucky to see the changing of the floral tribute and the goose stepping soldiers after their changing of the guard.
Our journey then proceeded past the second largest salt lake in the country and we strolled out onto the salt, not as magnificent as Bolivia but still a bit disorientating. We also had our first Turkish ice cream,it doesn’t melt as it contains gum and has to be stirred constantly to stop it solidifying.
Our hotel appears to be an old caravansarai and our rooms are carved into the rock and full of delightful artefacts. In the evening we drove out to have a traditional dinner in a village home.
